Our previous research, supported by the NPB in 2014 and 2015, has clearly documented the tremendous impact maturity has, not only on germination and emergence, but also on subsequent life history traits and physiological performance of the crop season long. We have also shown that some varieties are more affected by immaturity than others. These results have led to a host of questions not previously addressed including 4 priority areas our team has identified: 1) develop a late season prediction tool to evaluate seed maturity and the probability of harvesting quality seed; 2) develop a robust peanut vigor test that addresses additional physiological traits; 3) evaluate the generational imprint of immaturity on next season crop performance; and 4) develop a definitive test of peanut maturity based on chemical analysis and use-this to test alternative in-shell maturity assessment techniques that do not require pod blasting. This work will not only further evaluate the impact of maturity on the peanut industry but will also provide applicable tools for growers to improve seed maturity and thus quality.
