In the Virginia-Carolina (VC) region, distribution of precipitation is often deficient during June, July, and August in some years leading to recurrent droughts (Peterson et. al., 2006). The lack of precipitation during these months may have significant impact on peanut yields (Singh, 2013). Because drought occurs in varying frequencies, durations and intensities in many key peanut growing areas in Virginia, the U.S.A. and the world, improving our understanding of how peanut plants respond to water deficit stress and identifying drought tolerant genotypes is important and can be done with the new technologies available Gas exchangethe exchange of water and CO2 with the peanut plant and the air is an area of study explains certain aspects of the peanut response to drought tolerance. This study examines two effects of drought on peanut gas exchange: the increasing vapor pressure deficit and the decreasing volumetric soil moisture.
