5 Inexpensive, Family-Friendly Road Trip Snacks

If a road trip is part of your summer plans, we have some great ideas to keep you and your family fueled and minimize stops.

Boiled peanuts. Boiled peanuts are a popular roadside snack in the southern U.S. Young, raw (aka green) peanuts in their shells are cooked in a brine, sometimes with spices, for hours until the nuts are al dente and flavorful. Enjoyed hot or cold, summer is the best time to get a road trip boiled peanut fix.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Chickpea Cookie Dough. You won’t need to go inside a convenience store for a sweet treat if you make these yummy faux cookie dough bites before you hit the road. Healthy and budget-friendly chickpeas form the base and peanut butter and chocolate chips make these snacks irresistible.

Peanut Butter & Jelly. The classic sandwich is perfect to pack for a road trip. It’s delicious, affordable and it will keep for hours without taking up valuable cooler space. Cut the sandwiches into fun shapes for the kids.

Sweet and Sour Banh Mi Wrap. You won’t think about the drive thru if you pack this wrap. Use tempeh, tofu or chicken for the protein and top with crunchy, pickled veggies for a kick and a drizzle of spicy peanut butter sauce.

Fresh Farro and Peanut Salad. Take a break from green salads and mix up this vibrant whole-grain version. With naturally sweet, chopped dates and crunchy peanuts, the kids might give it a try too!

Enjoy any or all of these ideas on your summer road trip adventure and savor the journey!
