
OCTOBER 8, 2015--ATLANTA—In response to the thousands of families affected by the devastating floods in South Carolina earlier this week, Peanut Proud, a charitable organization of the U. S. peanut industry, is partnering with peanut state grower organizations, National Peanut Board and peanut butter manufacturers to deliver 62,010 jars of donated peanut butter to a food bank in Columbia, S. C.; one of the hardest hit areas. The retail value of the donation is estimated at $180,000.
This week, National Peanut Board approved a donation of $10,000 for disaster relief to Peanut Proud. Georgia Peanut Commission, Virginia Peanut Growers Association and North Carolina Peanut Growers Association; all of which have on-going commitments to Peanut Proud, stepped up their state’s donations this week to provide disaster relief.
“Our board members are pleased to team up with Peanut Proud to provide the ideal food for disaster relief. Peanut butter has seven grams of protein, 30 essential vitamins and minerals and no need for refrigeration,” said Bob Parker, president and CEO of National Peanut Board. “Our producers are proud of the crop they grow—a nutritious and delicious food that is the most-sought-after donation by food banks for emergencies and year-round use.”
Peanut butter manufactured by J. M. Smucker Company, Algood Foods, Golden Boy Foods, The Kroger Company and John B. Sanfilippo & Son is included in the shipments to be delivered to Harvest Hope Food Bank. (2220 Shop Road, Columbia, S. C., 29201). The initial shipment is set to arrive Thursday., Oct. 8 with additional shipments delivered Monday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, 13. Southern AG Carriers will deliver the first two shipments and J. M. Smucker Company will deliver the final shipment.
“This donation represents the broadest industry participation and strongest overall financial support that Peanut Proud has seen since its inception in 2009,” said Gregg Grimsley, president of Peanut Proud.
